Hi, John.

The simple answer is, if the group doesn't need moderating, the moderators won't moderate. They're just unpaid volunteers from the member pool, and are not really looking for work.

ka4wja Lou and Mary,
You may wish to check out the c470 yahoo group......the messages post and are sent just like the old list......(or you can use the web)

It seems that most all of the members of the old list are there now, myself included......(and in the coming month, I suspect I'll cancel my sailnet membership)

c470 : Catalina 470 Sailboat

You can even post some attachements, etc. which is better than the old list.....and the messages show up in whatever e-mail inbox you designate, just like before.....

Wishing you both well...

John

Louaubert Well it looks like I got in to the new list. Hope everybody from the old list joins also.
I want to thank Sailnet for making this list available. I would miss this group more than I can say. I have learned so much over the years and I am sure others on the list would say the same.
John, thanx for your concerns as you always express a great point of view. I think the moderaation will not bother our group at all. From our past list we have not had much of a problem.

Thanx again

SailorMitch my main complaint about the moderators on here is that they usually remove the porn spammers before i get a chance to enjoy it.

In over 30 years of ham radio discussions, with people from ALL over the world, on all number of subjects, I've never felt the need to be moderated......

Perhaps I'm too sensitive to this issue.....and perhaps I've underestimated the amount of non-c470 owners who will be contributing to our discussiuons....

John
Hi again John..In answer to your question "why"...I think the answer lies in the new VERY public status of this forum vs. the old lists. We have about 120,000 active users here and at any moment in time about 10x as many guests as members using the forums. Contrast that to the very private nature of small e-mail groups and the common bonds there. You are going to find a lot of people responding...some not politely...some spammers etc. and that will be a change. Trust me...there will be some moderating needed!
The other thing I would say is that since this is now a public forum owned by sailnet...certain standards are expected to be adhered to and things like profanity that might have been ok between your small group are just not acceptable here...indeed, most is automatically filtered which is a form of moderation.
So...all in all...some changes I will expect will be a net positive for you guys and others will be a negative. As others have pointed out...
Hope on balance it is positive and you stick around!

ka4wja Wow! Such responses.....
I appreciate them all.....

To the "administrator" (and others):
I do know proper manners, etiquette, speech, etc......I was raised by 2 loving and caring parents, many older siblings, etc....and in addition to being a very well educated person, I've owner and operated my own business (successfully) for 25 years.....have taught hundreds of seminars, and spoke to audiences of thousands....as well as volunteer in my local middle school, teaching 8th graders.......

In addition to those attributes, I've spent most of my life boating and sailing....
Voyaging and cruising in remote places starting in the 1960's......
Across the North Atlantic, the Med, Florida, Bahamas, Caribbean, etc....
I've met thousnads of wonderful people, from many nations and cultures, and have learned a lot from them all.....

And, I may be new to this particular sailnet.com forum, but I'm not new to web-based sailing discussion forums....since as an SSCA member and long-time user of the SSCA discussion forums, I'm quite familar with what can happen on line, when good manners are not adhered to.......

And, I've spent the past 6 years discussing our Catalina 470's with other owners, in our sailnet.net email-based discussion list.....

My concern over being "moderated" is my personal taste, and NOT to imply that the sailnet forum's moderators / administrators are anything but honorable......

My question is:
WHY???
Why does a discussion group (especially among friends), concerning a common interest (we all own the same model boat), need a moderator?????

Perhaps I'm too sensitive to this issue.....and perhaps I've underestimated the amount of non-c470 owners who will be contributing to our discussiuons....and lastly, I may need to simply "moderate" myself more!!!

I'll do my best to deal with the changes that sailnet has dealt us all.....but I guess my frustrations have shown through in this posting, huh???

Camaraderie, no worries here!!!!
You seem like a nice guy......and I DO appreciate your assistance in getting my original post (from last week) moved back here, to its original location......

** And, yes, I have read through much of the guidelines and procedures.....
And, although I did upload a small photo as my signature photo.....I still haven't seen it....so I susepct that you all (admin and moderators) have been fairly busy with so many new people "coming in from the cold" of the old e-mail discussion lists..... }

You mean the no longer existing email lists that disappeared unannounced? you guys have lost a lot of goodwill with your handling of this one.

camaraderie John...hopefully you won't find the moderation too intrusive. You might want to review the forum guidelines to get a grip on what we consider important here.
http://www.sailnet.com/forums/genera...uncements.html
Use the little "report post" triangle icon if you find spammers or "nasty posts" that do not conform to these guidelines and we'll be happy to jump in to keep things on an "even keel."

Moderated Discussion Group?????

I joined the "c470 list" run by sailnet.net, back in late 2002 / early 2003.....almost 6 years ago......(and didn't buy my 470 until early 2004.....)

To say that I learned a lot from ALL of you (now totalling > 150), is a BIG understatement!!!!

But, it looks like time marches on, and we'll need to find a new home.....
Perhaps sailnet.com.......perhaps a yahoo group.......perhaps another option?????

I'm not sure what's best for all......
We'll need to figure that out together......

SO.....here's the $64,000 question.....
(A question to all C470 owners that make it here to the sailnet.com forum, from our sailnet.net e-mail based discussion list......)

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Do we all wish a public discussion forum, with "moderators" who can decide what we can ask / comment / discuss????
** Yes, sailnet.com PAYS for this website, so THEY do get a "say so", but I've seen other on-line (web-based) discussion forums turn into places that I'd not care to be involved in.......they range from heavily censored and moderated, all the way to rude, nasty posts from the "general sailing public" that have nothing to do with what you joined the forum for......}
So, in the coming weeks, as we all get around to this sailnet.com forum, we'll need to make some decsions.......
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

So, all my fellow C470 owners, please contribute to the discussion.......

John
