Thanks for the note. Ive also heard of stories about Ferro Boats surviving running onto reefs and hitting objests that would send any other boat to Davey Jones Locker. The more we educate fellow sailors on Ferro-Cement boats, we`re that much closer to turn a once bad name to a good one.

Ok here ya go,I had a friend who owned a cement boat I replaced the cockpit deck and then we decided to cut the cockpit wider as she was a bit cramped and the seat was so wide you could not sit easly. We took carbrindum blades and began to cut the 5/8" thick mud one blade two,three,four and we had only gotten one foot cut. We finally got a diamond blade and with it wet cut out the cockpit in about four hours. We took a piece of the cement and took a hammer to it. We beat it as hard as we could and it would not break. We got a small maul and laid into it nothing nada. That was the toughest stuff I ever ran onto other than steel. One more thing I cant remember where it is but a freighter went aground when she was fairly new maybe in the 50ies and last I knew she was still on that reef and had outlasted many steel hulls and was a land mark.I saw some junk boats built in the sixties and seventies in south Florida but like they say find the history and if the rebar is OK go for it.

The cost will vary from the same price to as much as 50% less. It all depends on the market and who`s selling it. For example when I purchased my 60ftr. It went for 65k. The mother ship the exact same boat went for 235k to the current owners.And now the current owner says it`s been appraised at the mid 4`s As more and more people find out that the "Bad" name of Ferro-Cement boats came from failed attempts of the builders and it wasn`t the boat itself then you`ll see the market go up to where it should be.Good luck on your search.

I don''t have any stories about Ferro-Cement, but as a person who currently owns a 25''er and is looking to end up with something around 50'', I would like to know about the cost of one compared to other hulls.

New Horizons is ferro? Never would''ve guessed. She sits in the slip at Sapphire and charters almost daily, I believe. Pretty boat.

There`s nothing wrong with a well built Ferro-Cement boat. As you can tell I`m a strong advicate of "Rock" boats. I also beleive that fellow owners owe it to the breed to let others know how proud they are to have one. A bad name was given to them un-justly and it`s my mission to change all of that. I have nothing but great thing to say about my "Island Chief". It`s also as fare as any glass boat out there. When I first saw it I too thought it was glass until I rap the side of it and damn near broke my hand. The "Island Chief" and the "New Horizons" where design by the late Stan Huntingford. Stan design a good number of boats and it`s possible the one you saw was one of them. There are a great number of Ferro-Cement boats out there still in service. The ones that gave them a bad name are more than likely not even sailing any more, or never made it to the water. So, if any of you out there have any questions or a story "Good" or "Bad" I would love to hear from you.

We were in San Diego in June for a few days of sailing. Tied up at the marina we stayed at was a 50+ ft 2 masted cement sailboat.

We were impressed by her size and rigging that I knew after we checked in with the harbormaster on a slip, I would be walking down for a closer look. The owner and his wife were NZ''ers and had crossed the Pacific a few times in her. To be perfectly honest, I had no clue she wasn''t fiberglass until the owner told me. And he was quite proud of that boat.

I had a lot of questions. He had 3 foresail on hydrolic winches, easy mast access for radar and antennas.

If that was the boat we were looking to move up to, costs aside, I''d give serious consideration to puchasing.
