|sailingdog||Actually, the OEM mast step is a three-sided box on my boat. The modification I made was getting a friend to make up the stainless steel plates and drill the holes in the mast step for the plates to bolt to. Running the outhaul back at the same time would be an excellent Idea.|

Thanks for the responses. Are there any plate products that can be installed without lifting the mast out of the step? The one in sailingdog's photo looks like it surrounds the mast.I imagine I could have Garhauer make up a plate that would sandwich between the step and the mast, but that would require lifting the mast twice - once to template and once to install.
I'll take a photo of the step to show you guys.
Maybe I should try to rig the outhaul to lead back while I'm at it. It's currently only adjustable from the end of the boom, which means it never gets adjusted for the downwind legs when it would be nice to loosen it.

|sailingdog||The plates I've setup will allow me to run a total of 12 lines aft to the cockpit. I currently only have ten lines run aft: Six reefing lines (reef tack and clews for 1st, 2nd, and 3rd reef points), main halyard, outhaul, topping lift, boomvang. The boom brake line is run aft, but not through the same set of deck organizers/line clutches.|

You can also put a cheek block (or two) on the mast, near the base and from there run the lines to your deck organizer. That way all the laods are shear loads and don't require big backing plates.
I agree with SD about running them to the cockpit. For the first few years I had my Garhauer vang rigged as you described with a cam cleat and it was such a PITA that I rarely adjusted it. Now that I've got it running to the cockpit, it's a completely different story. I knda wish I had the organizer capacity to run a few more lines back, i.e. cunningham, second reef line.

You really want to run the lines for the vang and cunningham aft to the cockpit, so you can adjust them more easily under sail. Can you add a plate to the mast step to attach blocks to? That's what I did. Here's a photo of the modified mast step on my boat. The advantage of adding a plate to the mast step is you have fewer holes to drill in the deck. As a bonus, the mast acts to keep the blocks down, where if they were attached to the cabin top, it would be just the strength of the backing plate and screws doing that.

Adding rigid vang + Cunningham
I just took delivery of a new rigid vang from Garhauer, and realized that I have no way to cleat it. I was thinking that I'd just replace the bottom block with one that has a cam cleat on it, but in talking to Mark at Garhauer, it seems like that's probably not the best plan. It would be difficult to release.
I've been thinking about adding Cunningham as well, so I guess it's time to bite the bullet and install a deck organizer and a pair of clutches or cam cleats on the cabintop.
So I guess my question is more about the Cunningham. My mast is deck-stepped, and I don't have any sort of mast plate. What sort of purchase is required? Should I attach it to the mast, or to the deck?
This is all going to be a big pain because the P30 has a hard plastic headliner.
