Delirious I'll give the same answer I give when comparing 200x hull and sail designs to 198x models: The sea hasn't changed.

As a former dinghy sailor I still rely on the Windex.

Shroud feathers, Elvstrom ticklers, loose sail threads and even ear hairs can all help with interpreting the wind, so it's never bad to have lots of information.

It seems of the big three (speed/depth/wind) to be the one most often on the fritz.

artbyjody 2001 was a good year - wonder how much the need for wind instruments has changed in the last 7 years

soloplus4 The wind instruments help me know if I am reaching my target boat speed according to the wind speed. If im not then I am triming something wrong. I have a table that shows what my boat speed should be in so much wind at a particular degree heading. But I quess over all its just for fun to see if I can tweek my boat for more speed.

wind instruments - how necessary

I''ve managed for 13 years with a couple of woolies tied to the shrouds and a couple threaded through the sails. About as reliable as a windex and much easier to repair.

wind instruments - how necessary

As I refit and outfit my 27 year old Valiant I look at the old telcor instruments and ask myself, "do I really need instruments to tell me what direction and velocity the wind is blowing?". On a trip from Boston to L.A. I never turned them on. Am I missing a good bet? Are they just a "COOL" toy? Is a windex all one really needs?
