Opinions are like bellybuttons everyone has one,here''s mine.Now is the perfect time to replace the gate valve with a new thru hull and ball valve. usually I subscribe to the theory of if it anin''t broke don''t fix it, but thru hull fittings and valves are in another catagory. pull the boat and replace both then you will not have that little voice in your head taunting you with ideas of loose thru hulls and water intrustion.

I just replaced several on my 35 year old Morgan. Both the gate valves and thruhulls were bronze. I hit them with a liberal dose of WD-40, attached a crescent wrench to the body of the gate valve and tapped with a hammer. They came off surpisingly easily. Mine is a freshwater boat. If your thruhull is corroded, there is certainly a chance that you''ll destroy it. In that case, you probably needed a new thruhull anyway. Good idea to replace the gatevalves.

I want to replace a gate valve that leads to a through hull on my boat, and I am wondering about the nature of the work. Since the valve has been in place some time, it may be difficult to remove. Is there some chance that I might damage the through hull? Are there any suggestions about loosening the valve before trying to remove it? Any secrets out there that might make this less painful?
