superiorvoyager The pipe is about 2" Couldn't extend the pipe up as it would block the companionway door. In the spring I will try the stopper idea.

CrazyRu Is it possible to place a winch on cabin top outside? Just extend the tube all way up through the top, and seal everything around the centerboard.

On my boat line for a board exits at cabin top. Inside tube looks like just a post, a handle.

blt2ski How big is the tube? a lot of times rubber stoppers like Chris talked about, ie ones for fountains can be found pre cut with a hole from the mold. In your case, one that is drilled and cut by yourself, will work find, but in fountain situation, the premolded ones would be better vs making your own.

Most of the of the ones made for a fountain, are in the 3/4-1" diam in size. I would imagine that the hole for a CB wire is a bit smaller. But could be wrong here.

The rubber stopper method is also commonly used in fountains to plug the bowl and run the power cord for the pump down through the pedestal.

The weight is not the important thing here. The centreboard decreases the tendency of the boat to drift to leeward and also changes the dynamics of the water flow under the boat. Both of these should contribute to improved handling, especially when pointing up.

Sailormann The rubber stopper described by mercs is the best solution to your problem. There are several boats that use this method.

ckgreenman Yes having the deeper keel helps you're upwind performance. Have the weight in the keel extended helps counteract the heel.

superiorvoyager Yes it seems to make sence that the keel down would make a real difference but in the real world it isn't that obvious. A little help heading up wind but otherwise... Of course part of it may be that I have 3,500lbs lead in the keel already. and when swung up the center board is still at the very bottom of the keel Sounds like Merc2dogs sugestion of the Rubber stopper might be the best way to go. Can't have the water splashing in as it is in my engine room and goes all over the batteries.

Uh, that's kind of like having your 4-200lb buddies sit on the rail instead of in the cockpit! It would make a little difference.
