Many early Catalina 30''s were equipped with that motor. The consensis seems to be that if you use the motor primarily for leaving / entereing the harbor, the engine is sufficient. If you use the engine for cruising when there is no wind, and / or plan on motoring long distances, like in the IWC, then it''s not sufficient.

Depends on how easily the hull is driven. For example, a modern race boat doesnt need alot of power to get upto hull speed. I have a 34'' Nicholson with a 48hp diesel; we can hit 8+ knots in flat water. Yes, its probably overkill but I do like having the extra power when i need it.

I had a 33'' with a 11 hp. It would hit hull speed and was very economical. But once I was setting the hook in 40 kts wind, I had a hard time motering into it. But it all worked out.

A common rule of thumb is 1 HP of engine for every 500# of displ.- hence this boat might be be better off with 18 - 20 HP Aux.

I am considering buying a Pearson 32 with an 11 hp Universal Diesel. I have been told that this is a terribly small engine for the boat, as I am going to use the boat primarily for coastal cruising. The displacement of this boat is about 9400 pounds. Does anyone have any experience with this or any like combination? Am I going to be horrified?
