sailingdog Try 5/16" line with the figure 8. Finding the right position on the boom is key.

Recommendations on a home-made boom brake for my dinghy?

Hi everyone,

After a nasty gybing incident recently that resulted in extensive damage to my mast step and deck, I'm interested in rigging up a cheap boom brake for my 12' Oday Widgeon with 90 sqft of sail. I've read some older threads here about using either a climbing figure 8 or a rescue 8 for the purpose, and saw that some people had gotten this to work okay. Does anyone have suggestions on what size/type of hardware and line to use specifically for my little boat?

Advice much appreciated!
