|arf145||I'm down at Shipwright off of Herring Bay. I've seen you on the P28 forum as well. And I saw your boat at Holiday Hill last Friday when I helped a friend move his 28-2 there. Was yours the one with new running rigging? You do have quite a flotilla of 28-2s now.|

I will admit that I will have to check that out. I will be down at the boat tomorrow afternoon and will see what I can determine. If I run out of daylight I will put it off until Saturday.
I see that you have a 1987 P28-2 also on the Chesapeake. Where are you slipped? There are now three 28-2's at our marina plus no less than 5 other Pearsons of various sizes. Getting to be quite a club at the Holiday Hill Marina.

|arf145||Rock, are you sure that pedestal guard bracket raised the throttle? If I recall correctly (somewhat of an if), the plastic housing the bracket goes under is above the throttle. Increased height might not have been a factor, but messing around in that area might. If the problem came right after that work, I'd be looking inside/beneath the compass housing for some new obstruction resulting from that work.|

My 3GMF has a control clamp on the cable near the engine because there is a fine line between too much & not enough drag on the cable, something I have to fiddle with every year. If you have, check the tension on it.
Also, once after leaving the boat for ~6 weeks, the throttle lever was rusted & stiff. A little WD40 & some manual exercise loosened it up.

You need to isolate your problem, there are 3 likely problem areas. I would start by removing the throttle cable from the engine and hand throttling it. The governor arm should be easy to hold at different throttle settings with 1 finger when the engine is running. If this is not the case, you probably need to adjust the springs for it. I am not familiar with the specific engine but the springs are set up as a pretty standard linkage so with a little thinking, most people can figure it out.
The next thing to do would be to disconnect the throttle end as well. Try moving the throttle back and forth and if there is much resistance, something is wrong with it. The morse units can corrode quite easily and I have not been impressed with their build quality. If this is in fact the problem, cleaning and lubing it may help but you also may need a new throttle.
The final thing to do is to pull the cable back and forth by hand. This should be quite easy, like pulling a brake cable through on a bike. If it is not, check for any tight bends or areas where the cable has been flattened. The ends of the cables tend to be problematic and if they get bent at all, they get really stiff. PB blaster makes a special cable lube which you could try here as well.
I replaced a setup on a boat this summer where I was worried that I would physically break the throttle lever trying to push on it. There were two issues there. One was that the governor arm had a lot of resistance and one of the springs needed to be tightened and the other issue was that the morse control was ruined so we replaced it with a much nicer kobelt unit.

Pearson Throttle Cable Sticking
I have a 1987 Pearson 28-2 with a Yanmar 2GM20F. I could use your ideas on a problem that I am having with my throttle cable. The throttle has always been pretty stiff to operate but now it is practically impossible to move forward. The only thing that has changed is that I added a pedestal guard which has 1/4 inch high bracket under the compass on the Edson pedestal (334 I think). That would have raised the throttle handle by that 1/4 inch...so I suppose that could have been a problem.
I also thought that the bolt holding the governor arm might be too tight but I
don't know if that is even a possibility and I would know why it would all of a
sudden tighten on itself.
What else should I look for and how can I adjust the cable if that is in fact
the issue. Am I missing something here?
