mitiempo You're right - that makes it a lot easier to change over to slab. I've seen a few of those systems but not for a while. Good luck

brob76 Memory failed me. I went back to the boat today and found this to be a "behind-the-mast" furler rather than in-mast. Much like the jib furler. So luckily, the spar was unmodified. I think I give it a try but will ultimately buy a new/used main and go back to tried and true slab reefing. Don't like the idea of roachless, battenless mains.

In general I agree with you and would prefer not to have it... but I've never had one either so may be biased based on hearsay..... Obviously these rigs are much improved of late - your success may well depend on how new/recent a version this one is.

brob76 Thanks for the advice. I'll try it out and see how I like it. Just that the idea of IM roller furling concerns me. Worried that it may jam at an inopportune moment. Slides rarely let you down.

Faster Converting an in mast furler to standard main is probably possible but not practical I don't think.. the section is different, heavier, the slot isn't always centered, etc... I think Brian's right that you'd be better off to replace the mast altogether.. an expensive proposition.

I'd agree you should see whether you like it/hate it before deciding what to do about it.

mitiempo I prefer 2 line slab (easier on the sail than single and easier to tension the luff) and that is what I have now, but with inmast as long as it's there you may as well use it. I would guess you would have to change the mast maybe to convert, but I'm not sure. One downfall is that you lose the roach as the sail is usually without battens. Good luck.

brob76 Thanks! Hopefully going to get the basics done this winter (bottom, sails and rigging) and get 'er in the water by spring. I'm wondering how difficult it would be, or if it's possible, to convert a furling mast to standard sailtrack. Never had an issue with single line slab reefing.

mitiempo That would mean that the mast is much newer than the boat. While they have their detractors they apparently work quite well. Those that have them like them usually. Almost all Beneteau and Catalina that are larger have them as standard now. Congratulations. Now the work starts.

brob76 I ended up buying the Alberg. Offered 8K and they took it. It's a bit of a mess. I'm going to spend quite a bit time cleaning it up but the hull and deck are in great shape as is the engine. One thing it has that I'm unfamiliar with is in-mast main sail furling/reefing. Does anyone have any experience with these types of furlers? Are they problematic?
