|klem||As flatracker said, the receipts do not lie. You want to see what is on them and also who did the rebuild. Shops have different reputations for their rebuild quality so check out the shop who did it as well as what they charged the customer for. Rebuilding an engine is not rocket science but it is shocking to me how many shops mess things up. Provided the shop is good, there is no reason to fear a rebuild.|

Thanks Flatracker. The ad states "completely overhauled engine" and when I asked what was done the broker advised "completely rebuilt". Will asked for receipts during the survey. If we have any doubts I'll get a separate survey done by a machanic.

Rebuild or overhaul
If engine was rebuilt, you would expect new sleeves, pistons, rings and wrist pins. All new bearings and rod bolts. The head competely gone through, with new valve guides and seals and surfaced. The block dipped and all passages, both oil and water cleaned. And a lot more. On the other side of the ledger, if it was overhauled, you might expect a valve job, new rings and rod bearings. Possibly the mains also. A genuine rebuild should be as good as new, and last just as long. An overhaul would basically be a crap shoot. Many have a tendancy to call a simple overhaul a rebuild. Best way to tell the difference is to ask for receipts, parts and labor.

Perkins 4108 Rebuild
I am looking at a yacht with a Perkins 4-108 50HP with 5,800 hours. The engine was rebuilt last year. What I am wondering is what you would expect to have done from a engine rebuild?
