It's a year later I was thinking about this post the other day, did you get it all setup? If so how has it been going?

|BrandyIsland||nope, I had to get my old Perkins 4-108 sold first to be able to pay for the new drive. That was accomplished this week. So the new system should go in next month!! I haven't missed any boating, it has rained all June here in CT.|

|bossk||Got your new drive installed and running yet BrandyIsland? Inquiring minds would like to know how it's going|

I think it's going to become the norm fairly soon.

good luck with new motor
thanks for keeping us posted on your progress. I agree that electric could work well for sailors such as myself who mainly use the engine to get in and out of the pen. I am following your efforts with much interest particuarly how you go with battery range between charging. I would very rarely need a bit more range as I have to sometimes lower my mast to motor under bridges from the river that I do most of my sailing to the ocean(about an hour each way at 6 knots). One big plus not often mentioned is one less through hull fitting to go wrong at some time in the future.

|BrandyIsland||I am debating the battery bank right now. I am tempted to just use 12 T-105 6 volt batteries to create an inexpensive bank , then switch to an AGM bank latter..|

|BrandyIsland||Cool.. that is very much how I see it.|

Electric vs. IC
The fairest comparison I've seen for electric vs. IC in an identical application is the Caterpillar website www.cat-lift.com/PDFs/ElectricvsIC.pdf. Since Cat manufactures both versions they have a pretty good handle on the advantages and disadvantages. In my humble opinion the only real advantage of the IC lift is ease of refueling. Otherwise the electric lift wins hands down. Thanks. Steve S.

Brandyisland, that sounds great. Please take pictures and post as it gets put together. As the owner of two Prius' (Prii?), I get grief from my fellow firefighters on a daily basis. I keep wondering what they are making fun of? Getting 48 MPG or using less oil? Anyway, I like the idea of an electric drive. It sounds like you have sparked (sorry) some real interest on Sailnet. I can't wait to see the results.
Good Luck, Bill
