This is a good solution, but there are some things to consider.
Start by inspecting your masthead sheave to.
1. Verify that the sheave is designed for rope (some wire sheaves have a V formed grove.
2. Check that the masthead sheave has no damage on it that will "eat" the rope.
3. Find the maximum diameter the masthead sheave can take, if the diameter is to small you have an option to use "naked" high modulus line (the outer cover removed on the part of the rope that goes through the sheave.
4. replace sheave if needed
5. Select rope high modulus rope

No reason to still have wire on a boat except in areas of chafe. Standing rigging, lifelines, running rigging, etc. It's stronger, lighter, cheaper.

Since the high modulus line is generally thinner than Dacron, you may have to adjust/change the sheet stopper for the halyard.

This is really a no-brainer these days.. today rope is available that will out-perform wire and NEVER leave you bleeding...
I think generally if you can pull the rope you choose through the masthead sheaves (and/or any other sheaves in the run) you should get decent service out if it for a while. There are some 'strictly wire' sheaves in some mastheads, but if you're pulling a rope-wire splice through now you may be OK.
The good non stretch rope is a bit pricey - count on $2-3/foot for the real good stuff. SD will chime in here with the specs, I'm sure!

Changing from wire-rope to all rope
Running rigging is pretty shabby. Wondering if there is any problem with replacing the rope-wire with all rope? Guessing this probably isn't as straight forward as I think. Someone here already make the switch?
