RichH The cheaper the fabric the heavier the weight due to inferior 'crimping' of the yarns.
A high modulus cloth of lighter weight will vastly outperform a heavy inferior cloth vs. longevity vs. sail shape, etc. etc. etc.

7oz. is typical of plain vanilla woven dacron cloth for a typical 30 footer for a target venue that normally has 12-15kts.

Its all a balance between quality vs. economy .... and you rarely get both in the same package.

sailingdog Depends on the strength of the winds you normally sail in. If you're in an area with stronger winds normally, then a heavier weight sail is going to do much better than a lighter weight sail, since it is less likely to get blown out and distorted by the stronger winds. As I don't sail in your area, I can't say what your typical winds are like...

Dacron weight, Mail Sail

What weight dacron would be recommended for a mail sail on a 30 ft. cruising boat, Lake Ontario sailing. Looking at used sails, I have seen anywhere from 5.5 oz. to 9 oz. with 7 oz. seeming to be the most common. Is there that much of a difference in performance and life?

Thanks,

David
