KeelHaulin The grease is slowing the free spinning down; it's fine. Make sure you did not put so much grease on the spindle that it pushed down onto the lower sprocket/pawls. My small barient 10 that has roller bearings does not spin rapidly either when freshly greased.

jetdrvr393 No there were no burrs on anything. The grease I used was kinda thick but it was Lewmar grease so I assumed the right stuff. I also used their oil on the pawls and replaced all the pawl springs.
Thanks a lot for that link, those are definitely the winches I have.

saillife Since you say you've greased them & they don't have roller bearings they may not turn very freely. You just put light machine oil on the pawls right? Are there burrs inside the drum, on the spindle sleeve?

Best info I've found on older Lewmars is at Lewmar Winch Schematics this is what I'm guessing you have http://www.pyacht.com/graphics/Lew_WG_67.gif

Have to admit I was surprised that they don't have roller bearings. The schematic I looked at though doesn't show any.....

Old Lewmar Winches

So I have some old Lewmar no 7 single speed winches on my 1979 S2 7.3. I took them apart to service them for the first time the other day and discovered that there are no bearings underneath the drum like the manual shows that came with the service kit I ordered. I cleaned/greased them and all that stuff but now that I have put them back together they are not turning freely at all (not that they turned freely to begin with). They move with no problem but only when you grab them and turn them. I can't give them a turn and have them keep going like the Gibbs winches on the cabin top.
Is this normal for these and if not is there anything I can do to get them working right again?

Thanks
