tdw Yea to the follow the wires suggestion but lets face it sometimes that can be damn near impossible.

On ours the fluxgate is mounted in a locker in the quarter cabin.

night0wl I have a beneteau 343 and they mounted it in the aft cabin hanging locker, forward wall. Check the hanging lockers, dealers like to mount things in places where you actually need storage (dont get me started on how the A/C vents were installed in my boat).

GaryHLucas I bought a Fluke tone tracer for tracing out telephone lines in my house. It would work real well on a boat too, because you don't need to be able to see the wires as long as you get reasonably close, and signal will lead you right to the end of wire.

My house was wired by real fly-by-night. When I remodeled my kitchen I found two flying splices with wirenuts in the wall behind the counter, a plastered over junction box facing into the adjacent room, and another with burned up wiring buried in the ceiling! Hate to think what might be in the rest of the house.

Follow the wires

It is connected with wires. If it is hooked up, and on the boat, I guarantee that following the wires will lead you to it!!!

Auto Pilot Question

i own a beneteau 321 oceanis (1999). i have a raymarine ST4000+ autopilot which is not working properly. from the research i've done i was told that i probably have something metallic too close to the fluxgate compass. my only problem is that i can't find where it's mounted. i've taken apart half of my boat over the past week and i still can't find it. i know what it's supposed to look like but it's nowhere to be found. does anyone have any idea where a few of the places might be where they could hide it.
