Thanks for your replies. My boat is a C&C 36. I don't think the pole is set up for dip pole gybes. There is no line attatched to the mast end of the pole leading up to the top of the mast . . . only a topping lift at the foward end. These things are also missing: a spin halyard and block at the top of the mast for the halyard. We are just launching the boat tomorrow, and won't be sailing with the spinnaker any time soon, I was just up late with my mind wandering.
I get what happens up front with the end-to-end pole, but how are the sheets/guys run in the cockpit? led back through the blocks and both crisscross to use opposite winches?

If your boat is a 36, I'd think the size would require lazy sheets and dip pole gybes. The pole on my 36 would be a handful to end-to-end. I guess the question is how the pole is setup - if it is setup for dip-pole that should be apparent. If your boat does not have secondary sheet winches, I'd wonder what other spinnaker gear it is missing...

If you aren't going to be using lazy sheets/guys, then you only need one winch on each side of the boat for the spinnaker.
The pole will have to be switched from the line on the port side to the line on the starboard side or vice versa as you gybe the boat and the two lines change their function from sheet to guy and back.
The starboard line will become the sheet on one tack, and the guy on the other. Just the opposite is true of the port line, which will be the guy on the first tack, and the sheet on the second.
It would help if you said what boat you're on... I'm guessing a C&C 36 or so... from your handle.

only one set of winches for spin sheets/guys
I have only sailed with a spinnaker on a boat that had two sets of winches in the cockpit, so that the guy and sheet were both on winches on the same side of the boat, the sheet running across the cockpit from the opposite side. My new boat only has one set of winches, I assume that there won't be lazy sheets/guys, but I still can't picture how they will run in the cockpit. Can anyone explain it? the pole is end-for-end, I think?
