We attached a thru three way bronze ball valve to the thru hull leading to the raw water pump. When It is time to winterize I attach a hose to the fitting, and down into the antifreeze. I slowly turn over the engine till it draws the antifreeze through the whole system, water pump, strainer, engine, riser, water mufler and out the exhaust port.

On my old boat, I inserted a radiator hose tee and cap, similar to this. Universal Radiator Hose Tee Flush Kit (47018) on eBay!
They have plungers with a hose fitting that you can attach to the hull at the thru-hull. Once the boat is out of the water, I have one that I've never used.
I do what you did, take the hose off after the strainer and use a large funnel to pour anti-freeze through, seems to work fine.

your favorite way to winterize?
I have a C&C 32 (1981). Last year, we tried opening the raw water filter an pouring antifreeze down the tube. It was a bit messy & made me worried that we werent getting enough into the cooling system. I have seen people use various ways to attach to the thru-hull. If anyone has some insight, I would appreciate it. And, no, sailing down to florida is not an option ;-)
