I was looking for some general comments on the PS 32 Pilot House. I searched the boards already but did not find anything. Are there any 32 PH owners on the board that would share their comments.

Thanks
Eric

Rick,
I intend to use the boat for a combination of day sailing, and 3 day - 2 week trips. I have never owned a pilot house boat but it has always interested me so if some of my questions appear to be stupid or to vague, I apologize. I was wondering how well the boat is suited for day sailing?

In particular I have the following questions:

1. Do do you find the pilot house to be a hinderance on a shorter day sail?
2. Can you see over the pilot house or do you normaly look through it. I am 5'10" and my wife is 5'7".
3. How well does she sail in 6-8Kts of wind? Where is her sweet spot in terms of making hull speed? In winds over 20kts can she stay balanced?
4. How well does she go to weather and at what apparent wind angle?
5. What has been your experience with the quality of the build, have you had many major issues with it.
6. what will she cruise at under power both normal and maxed out?
7. When sailing from within the pilot house do you have a decent view of the sails?
8. Do you find the pilot house problematic as a result of windage either at anchor or while docking.

I am really trying to get an overall feel for how the boat is to live with on a day to day basis.

Thanks
Eric

1. No.
2. Either, but over the top of the coachtop is better visability.
3. Good. Over 10 knots. Yes.
4. Good. Close hauled is as good or better as any other sailboat I have owned.
5. Good build quality. Pacific Seacraft speaks for itself.
6. Do the math.
7. Of course not, but an experienced sailor has no issues with this.
8. No.

Eric,

I'm glad you found Rick. Hopefully he'll be able to give you some good feedback.

Just as a quick aside, now that I know more about how you plan to use the boat, and knowing that you've also considered the Mason 33, CR34, and PSC 34: If you continue to have an interest in the PH 32 but perhaps are unsure about whether you need a pilothouse, I would also urge you to look at the standard version of the PH 32, the Crealock 31. If it piques your interest I'd be happy to help with any questions you may have.

Now back to the PH 32.....

Question about PS32 Pilothouse headroom

New question about the PS 32 Pilothouse...

The manufacturer's spec says cabin headroom is 6'1". Can any PS 32 PH owners tell me whether the 6'1" headroom number applies to the upper Pilothouse area or the lower galley/head area, or both?

I am 6', 1.75" tall, so I'm looking for very specific headroom numbers on both the upper and lower areas of the boat.

I've read elsewhere that the V berth is 6'6", so I'm not concerned about that.

There are currently no PS PH 32 for sale in my area (Seattle), so I have no easy way of checking for myself.

Thanks!

I am seriously considering purchasing a PS PH 32. There are currently five listed for sale on Yachtworld, however there are none currently for sale in the Pacific NW. Before I get on a plane to go look at one, I'm wondering whether there is one in the Pacific NW which my wife and I might be able to poke our heads inside.

Are there any Sailnet followers out there with a PS PH 32 in the Pacific NW who might allow my wife and I to take a quick look inside?

Thanks!

PSPH 32 refrigeration

The PS PH 32 I just purchased does not have refrigeration. I'm looking for information regarding the refrigeration systems other owners have in place.

The space just outboard of the drawer frame, under the forward setee seat, appears to be about 8" wide, which is about 1.5" too narrow to house an Adler Barbour CU100 Condenser.

The narrower condenser units I see are lower power and only seem capable of powering a smaller (insufficient from my perspective) cooling plate.

From pictures, it looks like some owners have condensers under the aft setee seat. Is that my only option? Yes, I plan to consult a refrigeration expert in the near future, but I would very much like to hear of others experience in this matter.

Thanks,
Alan

I received a private message asking about whether we bought a PSPH 32, however I haven't made enough posts to allow me to send a PM, so I'm posting my reply here:

We did buy one. We're located in the Seattle area. We're closing in on our first year of ownership.

Not for a minute have I felt we bought the wrong boat. It is hard to imagine a design which makes a better use of space for a couple, or a couple with one or two kids.

Comparisons would be against an armada of broken-down Catalina charter boats, so there is no easy way to make a comparison.

Most of the negatives I can think of could be considered positives by others, depending on your needs/wants, but here is my list:

- I would prefer a slightly larger icebox. The current one is fine for my wife and I, but with two teenage boys along, another cubic foot or two would be nice.

- We are Pacific Northwest sailors. 70 gallons of fuel is way too much capacity. One fill-up represents an entire year of cruising. Dealing with stale diesel and keeping tanks topped up is more of a concern than running out.

- We're fanatical about not pumping overboard. I would prefer a 30 gallon holding tank rather than the existing 17-20ish gallon one.

- We have the 38hp Yanmar, which in my opinion, is about 8-10hp more than needed. Engine access is fabulous, but I wish we had about 4" more access between the engine and the bulkhead on the port side. Changing the raw water impeller is doable, but no easy task.

Everytime I say to myself, "that seems a bit wierd," I soon have an ah-ha moment and say, "wow, what a great design."

We happen to meet a sistership in the San Juan Islands this past summer. That couple had recently downsized from a Perry 47' to the PS32PH. They raved about how managable, but spacious the boat is. I would agree.

We chartered a Catalina 36 for the two previous years. Our PS32PH is more manuverable and (feels) more spacious. There is no boat, larger or smaller I would trade for.

Obviously we are happy with our selection. Please let me know if you have any other questions.

Re: PSPH 32 refrigeration

Follow-up on this on refrigeration post I made a while back...

We mounted our compressor on the forward bulkhead inside the compartment outboard of the forward setee seat. We put a 3" vent aft in that same compartment. On warm days, we generally leave one of the slatted compartment doors open, though it doesn't really get hot in there. We're in the Pacific NW, so I dream of heat being a problem.
