Faster On some of the 34s at least, one of the legs of the stanchion base does penetrate the deck inside the toerail... the bulk of the fitting is indeed on the toerail, but this one part of it gets a pretty good load if the stanchion is stressed or pulled on, and it's not hard to imagine an eventual leak there.

chef2sail Our stanchions on our 35 MKIII are not imbedded in the fiberglass. Many of the C&C's had stanchions attached to their toerails, something I have not seen on other boats. This is good in one respect as it never creates a weak spot in the deck or has to be rebedded. negative is that they are almost outboard and can easily catch a piling when docking.

Faster Agree with Dogship that the source of the leak is more likely a stanchion base than the toerail proper.

Access may be an issue, unfortunately.

Dog Ship Welcome to the website.
In my C&C Owners manual they recommend in the event of a leak to tighten the "nuts" along the gunnel. It states that you should take care to not turn the "bolt" as that will break the seal around the "bolt" and turn just the "nut" underneath.
There is butyl sealant in between the hull and deck that sandwiches the rubrail inside the joint. The toe rail is not sealed. The hull, deck and rubrail are bolted together with butyl sealant. Basically you just want to suck everything back down, no torque spec was given but I am sure if you tighten these nuts up that should stop the leak.
Also check your stanchion bases. The spinaker lines on my 32 have put a lot of strain on two of my stanchions. They were showing signs of possible failure. These I pulled out, bolts and all, and resealed.

C&C34 Deck leaks

my 1981 C&C34 seems to leak at the hull to deck joint. has anyone ever removed and rebedded thier toerail?
