Re: Jouet 37 rudder modified

Until you have built up a decent water speed in reverse, no rudder will steer on any sailboat.
Even then, the rudder tends to be very heavy when going astern.

Re: Jouet 37 rudder modified

GREETINGS EARTHLINGS ; If you are going to replace the rudder bearings USE ONLY CAST NYLON other nylons will allow for water seapage. Drill the hole smaller than the shaft size and use a ajustable reamer (one can hire) from tool shops AS ALWAYS GO SAFE

Re: Jouet 37 rudder modified

The section of rudder in front of the pivot that you are missing is very important to a rudder's performance. That is the only section that tries to push the rudder in the opposite direction that the rear section is pushing, to end up with a balanced rudder. Right now your arm is doing all the work the fore section would do. Replacing the missing sections will give greater control.

vindy Hi, jouet 37, can you send pictures of your repair rudder? We are in the same situation...

Re: Jouet 37 rudder modified

What kind of upgrades do you mean? The deck harware is original. OK, it is the 2nd mast, but it is 28 years old and now we have a furling genua and main sail. And also new windows without screws, I just fixed it with Sikaflex.

3 years ago we made inside a big refit. New paint in the whole bilge, new electric, new keel beams (we do have those things. I saw picture of Jouets where the keel screws are placed direct in the glass) and many other things. If you are interested in a photo story or something else about the ship, just feel free to ask me.

I am also keen on to see pictures of your boat.

At last a picture how we like to sail

Re: Jouet 37 rudder modified

Thanks Jouet37, you have a very nice looking boat and as far as I can see, many upgrades on it. Is very interesting to see your rudder, since it looks very different to the one I have on the other picture, but if it works good, then it must be correct.
I had mine done like the one in the picture and so far it feels wonderful, I still have to sail it a little more to see what results I get, but so far so good. The tiller now feels responsive and it sure works in reverse. I have much better tacking also now.
Thanks for all the responses Guys!! and is very nice for me to find someone with the same boat to talk to sometimes!
PS I will post a pic of how the rudder looks now!

Pretty boat Andreas!

Much nicer looking rudder than the OP's. Hopefully he has gotten things straightened out.
