Re: Dolphin rescue

Last month some fellow sailors participated in the recue of a gray whale off Dana Point. After dropping some lighted floats in the net Pete (boat owner) and Gary (all bundled up on foredeck) stood by and babysat the whale all night until rescue effort resumed in the morning. If you watch the video there is only a short scene of their boat "Aloha Kate" as they were relieved in the morning. They said the whale tried to stay near them as much as they were trying to stay close to him.

Re: Dolphin rescue

Dolphin beachings are not uncommon on the east coast either.
I'm always saddened to hear of reports with large numbers of fatalities of those wonderful marine mammals.
It is nice to see people able to help them get back to sea.
Thanks Faster.

Dolphin rescue

Not exactly sailing related, but not necessarily an 'off topic' subject either..

One often hears marine lore of a dolphin seemingly saving a struggling swimmer, or warning of dangers ahead etc.. Here's a nice short video of people helping out during one of those inexplicable episodes of dolphins beaching themselves.

Whatever the motivation, this footage shows how quickly they become immobilized even in light surf.. good on these folks for how quickly they set things right!!
