Lets see your boat pets

I am not sure if a thread like this has already been done but I did not see one in “search”.

This thread is for anyone that has their creature on board with them at any time.
This is about any type of pet, be it bird, lizard, mouse, spider, snake, dog or cat…you get the idea.
Please post some pictures and / or any anecdotes about your creature that you care to share. (good or bad)
Don’t post pictures of Spot or Fluffy in the backyard but only post pictures of them on your boat, dingy, raft, on the beach, as long as it is boating related.
Perhaps someone thinking about having a pet on board might get a new idea or decide not to have a pet at all.

This is our dog “Trouble”…it is not just a name but a lifestyle. She is a pure bred mutt and a great dog. She does not join us every time we go out but she seems to enjoy her time on the boat. She always has her PFD on when not in the cabin (even though she swims like a fish) and is always
tethered when underway. Without fear, she would chase a pelican or dolphin near the boat while we are moving. It only took one over-nighter for her to learn it was OK to relieve herself on the floor of the cockpit.
While trouble is small as far as livestock goes, she could feed us for a couple days if we happened to get caught away from shore for a while as in a zombie apocalypse. Perhaps she would be more affective as bait. This is our boat creature and she brings smiles to the faces of all that meet her, especially my wife and myself.

CruisingDad - I see you're in Florida....how does Fatty handle the heat spending the day on the boat?

My brother had bulldogs...during the worst of our Texas summers they stayed inside unless going out to do their business.

I'm considering a bulldog myself, but the heat is a concern.

Home is where the cats are

Great question! And what if you have THREE cats? (See pics of the crew below.) Short answer is: live on a cat, which has space for the cats. Longer answer: follow this link for a blog post about how our cats have adjusted to full-time cruising: more JOY everywhere!: Home Is Where the Cats Are

Here's Tucker - Mr. Handsome:

Isabel takes a swim (doesn't like it):

Formerly long-haired Percy (long story):

Is it true that when a cat goes swimming in salt water one must rinse them in fresh water so the salt doesn't damage their kidneys? Not sure we are going to take our Siamese with
us.

Isabel's "swim" was in the Chesapeake - we didn't rinse her off but towel-dried her as much as she would let us. Later, Percy took a "swim" in the Sea of Abaco. I locked us both into one of the heads and used a warm soaking-wet washcloth to give him a fresh water "sponge bath" - he was thrilled as you might imagine! - I think I got most of the salt off. I hadn't heard about the potential for kidney damage, but figured all the salt probably wouldn't be good for him, or at least it wouldn't taste very good. (They both spent over an hour grooming after their respective dunkings.)

There's no doubt that bringing the cats has caused us a lot of bother and aggravation (speaking on behalf of ALL crewmembers, feline and human). But for us, it would have been akin to leaving children behind (and I've heard THEY're quite bothersome, as well!).
