"If they'd sell ME space in it, I wouldn't have to deal with other people's children... "
And where do you think the really good stewardesses put the really bad children who didn't listen when they were told to stop kicking the seat? Ahuh, that hatch in the floor, back by the galley...

I don't understand dog people at all.

A cat person would tell the cat to just start swimming.

The hold's a little dark but it's pressurized and the temperature is controlled just like the cabin. Not necessarily to the same setting; some have equipment that needs cooling so the hold stays no warmer than about 65F, but "around cabin temperature means fewer condensation issues, fewer drafts, etc. It's just kind of dark and the movement of the landing gear is a little noiser.

Paul-
It could be your "captain" was able to make Real Damn Sure of how his dog flew. There are some routes where dogs are not allowed below, because summer temperatures on the runway and long hot ground holds can add up to mean fatal heat stroke. Or, the opposite in winter.
The airlines all have imposed some bans on some routes, because these issues are real. Hell, I don't even like my luggage to fly down below. Seen enough nonsense going on with that, haven't we all?

Re: Ship to take me and my dog from west coast to Hawaii

In my limited understanding, under ADA regulations a service dog or companion animal normally is allowed to go anywhere their human goes. Which is why airlines allow even mastiffs and great danes to fly in the passenger cabin although you may be required to buy 3 seats abreast so the dog can lie on the floor in front of them.

Can't see that flights to Hawaii would be exempted from that.

So as long as they have to fly, and the airlines do make a damned pretty penny flying them....

Really? No commercial "pets in cabin" service ?
Even if you buy the seats for them?

I'm going to guess it's based on the same psychology that sells dog food made of ingredients that people like. Owner's project their likes and dislikes onto their pets. I bet these owners don't like to fly themselves.

Of course, they couldn't possibly know whether they would like to be offshore for a month either, but mentally view themselves floating across the ocean, rather than plummeting out of the sky.

Dogtravel Company - Travel to Hawaii

Doglover, call these folks and forget about small boats and informal two week gambles on a small boat.

Send me a postcard and an aloha shirt when you get there.

I've been wondering about how to have a unique sailing charter company.

I could take people and their dogs to Hawaii or maybe just the dogs

I would sooner take the dog on a sea crossing than the all-too-common over-obsessive irrationally indulgent dog owner. Unsafe and unwise, that.
