Really?... And surely you slow down to 5 mph when deer (or kangaroos) are around. Is this going to be another Sailnet "those crazy racers" threads? If the immediate concern of a skipper is with catastrophic damage/holing/sinking and endangerment of the crew, then of course they're bound by duty to care more about the boat than the critter. We all put our immediate survival first. Any keel, yes, even on your boat, could injure a sea creature. By and large, hitting large things underway isn't good for either party. In my humble experience in boats large and small, I haven't met a sailor yet who's thought it was OK for either boat or beast to hit/be hit. It's just much too dangerous and outcomes much too unpredictable at any speed for any boat.

Now this guy probably didn't even know what happened:

And then there's this one:

May have been making something of a logical leap but "retarded and/or evil" ? Now that is over the top.

Quite frankly it worries me the amount of damage wrought by the keels on modern racing boats and they slice through the water at those great speeds.

Competitors in the annual Sydney to Hobart regularly take out basking SunFish and I'm yet to hear anyone bemoaning the fate of the fish, its always oh bugger we broke our boat.

If those sailors really had any concern for the well being of various sea creatures they wouldn't, in my oopinion, have keels that would cut like a knife at those speeds.

That sounds like a very cruel way to abuse a whale.

I have sailed near -- but not too near -- whales. There is a much higher probability of contact with these racing machines moving along silently at 20+ knots. I like to think that at the slower speeds at which I sail each of the whale and I will have a bit more time to react to each other.

While broad reaching at night off the West Coast of Vancouver Island using the moon's reflection just under the boom as a guide, I saw "funny" wave. It was a dorsal fin. I missed.

On the 2007 Van Isle 360 we had a whale within 5 feet of the boat at night on the leg between Winter Harbour and Ucluelet. I think we disturbed its sleep. We heard a large commotion and saw a lot of froth in the water.

It does break up the rhythm.

It would have been catastrophic for both.

Considering they are probably going over 20kts that is some smooth driving!

Damn I would love to go for a sail on one of those beasts! (maybe not in the southern ocean though!)

I wonder if they knew it would be an obstacle course?
