Re: Rhode Island to Florida

There is a blue liquid that is applied on the rode between the chain and splice for an anchor line, this liquid dries and is used to stop fraying of the line when used with a windless, what is the name of this product?

Re: Rhode Island to Florida

sailor50 - standing / running rigging all new, surveyed APR 2012
jsaronson - know how to reef, sail is currently reefed with first reef in placed, 2nd. reef is in placed but not attached to sail, if it gets that bad I should not even be out on the water. Have a furling for jib. Do not have a inflatable life vest yet or safety harness. Would run a safety line prior to sailing. No paper charts yet, only of local area, have a ruler dividers, compass I have, have a spare impeller, belts, filters, tools.
Going to try full chat this will be my first time? anything is possible!

Rhode Island to Florida

you need to know how to reef the main and need a storm jib and maybe a 100%jib unless you have a furler. Inflatable life vest, safety harness with jack lines and anchor points. Paper charts and the knowledge to use them. parallel rules, dividers. Compass?
Spare impeller and belts, filters. tools. I'm sure there is a lot more!

Re: Rhode Island to Florida

You did not mention how old you standing/running rigging is - are you planning on having that surveyed before you go?

Re: Rhode Island to Florida

Hello, thank you for reponding. Took ASA sailing courses Fall of 2011. Purchased a 1978 Ericson in Feb 2012. Put in the Water in May and sailing around Narraganett Bay, RI. I got a lot of stuff with the boat.

I'll just list some of the stuff, the boat had a complete refit completed 2008 and fully finished in 2011, so every thing is about new except a few things.

engine: yanmar @QM20 new in 1989 900 hrs., 29 gal stainless fuel tank
water 41 gals 2 tanks
head - manual marine toilet, 20 gal holding tank with electric macerator
stove - origo 4100 non pressurized alcohol stove
frig - norcold icebos conversion system
hot water - isothern slim square 4 gal hot water heater
electrical - 2 agm series 27 house batteries / 1 agm series starter battery - 10 amp battery charger
manual and electrical bilge pump
electric windless
instruments - raymarine st6000 autopilot, knotmeter, depthsounder, wind system, garmin c80 chartplotter, VHF icom with gps locating remote, plus just purchased a handheld VHF radio " haven't used it yet" plus do not yet know how to used the chartplotter yet but have all the docs.
sails and rigging, north sails sail area 494 square ft. - 135% genoa, I think that I would not change sails until I become more atune to wht is up and running.
dingy - 10.5' Avon - need a motor and a motor lift.

I've bottom painted prior to launch, cleaned and looking at and inspecting systems. Changed the oil, willbe changing again in the fall with filter, also will be changing fuel filters.

All new safety equipment up tp date. Six life jackets after bringing 3 home for more space.

For the c80 chartplotter I purchased a Boston / New York chip, not sure how much area this covers, the ad said info for the East Coast?

As you can see I'm very new to all of this, 15 years of arm chair sailing, lessons, and 4 weekends of on the water experience.

Try not to overwhelm me with pages of information, I'm hoping to tag along with others on the way down, right now it a wait and see.

Thank you again for the reply.

If you tell what you have it would make it easier to add to your list. Navigation equip, emergency equipment, sail inventory, fuel and water capacities, engine?

Rhode Island to Florida

Hi, I'm Bill, very new to sailing, this Oct. I would like to sail from RI to Florida, solo. Any advice would be a great help. What items are a must for the boat, a 34' Ericson. I'm currently consideration a wind generator, any advice?
I'm estimating between 4 to 6 weeks.

I'm new to this site so please just bear with the mistakes I make.

Thank You
