Re: Best readily available soap

Seconded on dr bronners castille soap. It works supernaturally well on cleaning gelcoat stains and baked-on grease. I use it for hands, dishes, body, hair, deck, cabin sole. Foaming dispensers and spray bottles work better for everything, basically.

I like Dawn for washing the dishes and Dr. Bronner's peppermint castile soap for everything related to washing me. It comes highly concentrated so a small bottle goes a long way. You can find it at most health food stores.

Been using Dawn for about 15 years--works great for everything, saltwater or freshwater.

White Rain shampoo lathers up great in salt water.

RedtheBear The Bear's two cents:
Joy works well in fresh water and reasonalbly good in brackish water(read fresh water fed marinias) but to ME, (read Opinion) dawn grease cutter is best in salt water for dish water. For hair try any coconut oil base shampoo. I can't really verify this as I don"t have that problem. For body wash, sorry ladies, Lava! It cuts through every thing, grease, fuel oil, paint and varnish and general crud and is great exfolient. For landry try Borax, though for certain undergarments it may not be the best choice.
Just my views and findings.

miatapaul I think I remember a discussion on Cruisers net, though it may of been elsewhere, that said the Joy/Saltwater performance was grossly overstated. The seemingly universal agreement was that any quality soap should work.

tattoosteve joy still works best

Best readily available soap

I'm sure this has been often discussed but my searches yielded very little. Years ago we cruised with Joy as our soap for washing dishes and bathing in salt water. I'm wondering what is now recommended for each application. Suggestions please. On a recent passage, I believe we used Dawn which seemed to work OK.
