Re: wind direction & jetstream question

Ditto on Pilot Charts: http://msi.nga.mil/NGAPortal/MSI.por...ubConstant=APC Lots of land effect in play when near shore. The upper air winds are not really what you need to look at. Pressure systems that effect sailing are in surface forecasts. Use this NOAA link: Radiofax Charts - Boston to compare upper/lower level winds. In the summer, the Atlantic is usually dominated by high pressure. Getting toward fall, the high weakens and northern lows become more predominant. They can raise hell with the opposing Gulf Stream.

Jimmy Cornell's World Cruising Routes has a great section on weather patterns, trade winds, etc.

Hope these help... and welcome. There are lot of helpful, knowledgeable people on this board.

Re: wind direction & jetstream question

Use the noaa weather fax to see the correlation between the jet stream and the weather systems. At this time of year, the lows are north of the jet stream and the highs are south.

I do not think the jet stream will come play in your plans.

The jet stream is west to east generally, it does form omega blocks and tale other forms on occassion.

The 500 mB analysis of the weatherfax will show the jet stream position (the dark line).

This is one with which I am most familiar.

Northeast Pacific WX Briefing Package

Take a look at this one.

Gulf and Tropical Atlantic WX Briefing Package

Currently I see no jet stream on that weatherfax.

Re: wind direction & jetstream question

You should check the Pilot Charts for the Atlantic/Caribbean. I would trust those over which way the jet stream's going. These observations are the result of years of recording, before we even knew there *was* a jet stream.

Here's a link, just dial up the month(s) you want:

Atlas of Pilot Charts for the Major Oceans of the World

Jet stream usually divides weather systems, but what's happening on the surface is often very different from what's happening six miles up.

wind direction & jetstream question

I have been preparing my watkins 27 sailboat to cruise to the USVI from Maryland,
however I am not sure about the prevailing wind direction at diferent times of year after leaving Ft Lauderdale, Fl. I understand dec-may is the best time to be safe from hurricanes however doesn't the wind & jetstream typically head one direction part of the year and the other the rest? If anyone knows these answers or where I should research please help!
