I looked at a Kelly Peterson 44 today and was really disappointed to find that my ample height was left about 3" short in the height of the Saloon. I don't think its a show stopper considering that the KP44 is such a good boat for offshore, but I'm looking for any ideas from fellow longitudinally challenged purchasers for a good boat to spend a couple of years crossing oceans on.
Forget the Morgan 41 Out Island its an ugly boat mass produced for the Caribbean bare boat charter fleets. Head room on a barge still leaves you with a barge.Head room will be a problem with most boats, mine has 6'5".
Cheers, I've seen a few of these ip465s around the place, but way out of my price range and doesn't have my taste in romantic appeal.
I've read a few reviews saying the windward performance of the Endeavour 43s aren't great, anyone heard otherwise?
SimonV, that comment about the Morgans was about the same reaction as I had to what I saw available. I'm still pretty keen on the centre cockpit though so the Ericson 39B might not fit the bill.
Can anyone comment on an Adams 12/13 CC for headroom? Certainly meets my requirement of good sailing characteristics.
I checked the headroom in my Bristol 45.5 and it is about 6'5" in the main cabin and less in other parts of the boat (quite high in the cockpit though if you remove the bimini). I remember years ago seeing a 10 metre (as in the measurement rule) that had been built for the king of Sweden (or Norway or Denmark) who was 6' 9" but boats with really big headroom are rare. Designers are trying to keep the profile under control and every inch lower helps.
Thanks for measuring that headroom, I've just been looking at Bristol 45.5 and very much liking what I see. I'll be checking in with you regularly to see how those passages go over to the Maldives.
I've been looking around Oz for a nice Bristol, but so far not much luck. Were you looking for long before you found? Or was yours a fairly wide selection criteria like mine?
Just a thought here: If you have a center cockpit that means that your main cabin is going to be the aft cabin and the passage way to that cabin, in my experience as a short man, is going to be tight for you. I too like CC boats, but you might want to reconsider.
This is why my preference is the Endeavour 43, I'm sure there are others, not like the Gulfstar and many that have cramped access to the aft berth. Ours has 6' 10" throughout including the aft berth passageway that is nearly 4' wide. Many 43s have bunks here but ours has a workbench and with plenty of room for storage.
I am 6'4" and started off with insisting on headroom too. Now I have ejected this spec as it just is not feasible when trying to jamb in all the other things I want. 6'2" is now my goal - opens up about 2 orders of magnitude more boat designs to possibly being the one.
If you are on the west coast, see if you can find a Spencer 1330 CC. Never been in one, and likely never will be, but on paper, this is my dream boat. Rumor has it I would fit.
I have a 41' Columbia which has 6'4" clearance in the saloon and also in the walkways to the aft cabin through the head and galley. Its not 6'5" but close.
I have a TOCK (Tartan Offshore Cruising Ketch)(S and S design). Tartan built about 30 of them in the 1970-80s. I'm not so tall, but there is a lot of headroom in the boat, it is center cockpit, and aft of the cockpit is a large main cabin under a flush deck. Its 41 feet LOA, and definantly not a racing boat!!!!

I'm 6'5" and didn't expect to find much on standing height. A few of the suggestions here are what I've been looking at if I go bigger in the future. I just recently got my first boat and it may not have a lot of head room down below but it's plenty for what I'm doing anyway.
oh wait center cockpit ummm have to think about it for a bit sorry
