Re: Apostle Islands Trip

As stated watch the wind when anchoring overnight. Plan an anchor watch or set an alarm on the GPS. A charter dragged anchor last week around the islands, grounded and called for a tow.

Re: Apostle Islands Trip

Stockton is nice, as is Raspberry. For a little less traveled area, check out the Outer Island Light, and Devil's Island Light. Devil's Island sea caves are a must if the waves are small enough. Rocky/South Twin is a nice anchorage, with decent areas to get out and stretch your legs on shore.

Re: Apostle Islands Trip

Thanks again for the advice everyone. If anyone is up there, the dates I'll be up there are 25th - 28th. Send me a message if you're sailing up there!

Re: Apostle Islands Trip

My family really enjoyed Stockton Island. Nice beaches and hiking and a pretty snug place to anchor for the night in most wind conditions. I hope you have a great trip!

Re: Apostle Islands Trip

Stockton Island, though a popular place, does have a couple of nice anchorages and some hiking trails. Raspberry has a lighthouse, hiking trails and a nice anchorage on the east side but you need to pay attention to the wind and wave direction or you will likely be in for a rocky night if you anchor there. As others have mentioned, Bonnie Dahl's book "The Superior Way" is a great source of information.

Re: Apostle Islands Trip

What islands do you recommend explore? Outside of Madeline, what smaller less popuoler ones do you suggest?

I enjoy staying overnight at the Madeline Island Marina and enjoying good food and beverages in La Pointe.

Re: Apostle Islands Trip

Sorry, I'm bringing this thread back up even though its older but I'm going up to the Apostle's in August and chartering a boat for 4 days. What should be on my 'must do' list? What are some of the less known places? Do you have any personal favorites? Any other suggestions you have are welcome!

cb32863 Glad to see you had a great time, it is beautiful up there. Got any pics to share of your trip? I am not going to be able to get up there this year.

mmcguire Capt-T, we were scheduled on the 33' Jeanneau but an electronics issue had us move over to a 36' Catalina. I hope the boat was working well for your trip! We had a great sail up to Stockton I and anchored overnight in Quarry Bay in really calm conditions. Sailed back along the eastern side of Madeline Island and made it back in just around four hours in beautiful 12-15 knot winds. We plan to make a longer trip next year to do more exploring and hiking. I would highly recommend the trip.
