Re: Marine Surveyors in Greater Annapolis Area

We just used Bob Turner. He was very professional and easy to deal with, answered all of our questions and gave the boat a good going over. The person who bought our old boat used Karen Wiley and our impression of her is also quite positive.

Re: Marine Surveyors in Greater Annapolis Area

Know the original post is a tad dated, but always good to have a list of surveyors.

I used Gary Kerr last year and thought he did a pretty good job. It was my first survey so I don't have a lot to compare him to, but he found a number of small things and looked for several others. His email is gekker@msn.com and he is based in Parkville, MD.

Re: Marine Surveyors in Greater Annapolis Area

We used one of the surveyers mentioned and ended up confused, he seemed to pay attention to details but missed things that IMO someone who does this for a living shouldn't. There were other issues that I believe one who does this for a living should be up to date on. He did go back to the boat on his own at my request to check something, he brought a helper, when they left the issue was not resolved (took me 5 minures after reading a few posts), and when I went down to the boat later that day I found all the hatches and portlights left open and urine on the head seat, being that this Surveyor is highly recomended maybe this was the helpers doing. From my experience so far I'm not impressed with what help is available to the boat buyer. I'm just lucky enough to have some experience with mechanical and electrical things as well as know how to find answers in manuals and on the internet using this wonderful majic vodoo box.

Marine Survey Anchor Marine

I appreciate the comments re. Karen Alt at Anchor Marine. Does anyone else have any experience with Anchor for a pre-purchase survey? Thanks!

jtsails JUst a follow up. I tried to get David Manning, but he never answered his phone and I didn't want to pick someone that was difficult to get in touch with. I ended up using Karen Wiley Alt at Anchor Marine. I was very pleased! She is very thorough but does a great job of balancing realistic expectations on an older boat. Probably helped that the boat that I'm buying is in excellent shape and there were only a couple of issues to be addressed. She took her time on a pretty cold day, even though she was familiar with the boat, and even offered to stay and help me check out the engine.

wingNwing We used Fred Hecklinger - very experienced, had a lot of insights into our specific boat and some offshore sailing tips in general, and we'd use him again. Disclaimer: ours was an insurance survey, not a buyers survey.
