Re: All's Flare!

I guess the theory in mandating so many flares (12 on my boat) and the relatively short shelf life, is that marine pyrotechnics are purportedly unreliable and you want some redundancy in an emergency...that said, I am sure most of us end up with DOZENS of expired flares. In my part of Canada, they are not easy to get rid of...

At midnight on the Millenium New Years Eve, we figured it was safe (though illegal) to get rid of some of the stockpile of expired flares. We must have fired 3 or 4 dozen aerial flares with only a couple of 'duds' in the lot.

On a side note, try not to get in a marine distress situation on New years Eve

Back in my, shall we say less than reputable days a bunch of us were having a big back yard party. A keg or 5 , local band and about 100 of our closest friends. Of course there were some who crashed but at $5 a head who cared. Some smart guy thought it would be cool to shoot off a flare.
Was this the party?

But my question was: who has actually had to fire one off? (flare that is)[/QUOTE]

Back in my, shall we say less than reputable days a bunch of us were having a big back yard party. A keg or 5 , local band and about 100 of our closest friends. Of course there were some who crashed but at $5 a head who cared. Some smart guy thought it would be cool to shoot off a flare. Reloaded and was about to fire a second was told it wouldn't be a good idea. So he just put the flare gun back in his pocket where it belonged. While I was rolling him in the grass trying to separate him from the flames some guy with a bucket of water tried to throw it on him.

but to answer had to fire one off, on purpose, no
