Re: I'm Done

I'm disappointed, he didn't specifically name me as the problem... I'll keep trying.

Re: I'm Done

Not really sure what to make of the OP's original complaint.

To me, internet discussion groups, are the equivalent of sitting around talking to people somewhere, about things. Some of them you might know, and some of them you don't. And, there will be a lot of good advice thrown in with the bad. But, just like in person, peer pressure will help filter out a lot of the bad advice and often bad advice is relative anyway. Just because it's bad advice for one person and one situation, doesn't mean it is bad for every person and situation.

But, it can be funny. I go on another forum a lot, that has to do with center consoles. Someone was having troubles with their XXX trim tabs and there were several comments before one commenter, with a somewhat innocuous sign on name, said, "Call XXX at 123-456-7890 in the morning and ask for Richard" and your problem will be fixed to your satisfaction immediately."

Of course, then someone pipes back in, "Thanks for copying the telephone number of XXX. I'm sure he didn't think of that. What makes you think that will do any good?"

I laughed out loud at the answer. "Because I am Richard XXX, owner of XXX and I will fix his problem."

Sometime you know who you are talking to here (like when Bob Perry posts, which is amazing to me to actually see someone like that posting here) and sometimes you don't. But, that's what's so cool about the internet (if there is anything cool about it).

Re: I'm Done

What an embittered old ***** was the OP to waste 12 years of his life! And being so stupid as to complain about how the group didnt change but he did nothing to help it.

How selfish.

If SN isnt to your liking get off your bum and piss ofv, or work at making it better.

I haven't been on board for long but I think SN has been useful . Because of it I've learned how to type (too busy sailing and making stuff before) Now I've got time to work on the bully, intimidation, and rudeness aspects so that I can more fully enjoy and participate .As in most large gaggles, lead, follow or stand aside and observe.

I was here for the coup of 04, or was that 05, I'm not sure anymore? That's pretty much the time the last of the old guard was here and a new batch of experts rowed their way from some backeddy onto the scene. Since then the camber has slowly deteriorated as SN lost its way in the fog of egos.

I'm sure there's a number of theses primadonnas, nay self proclaimed experts with their endless years of experience that'll attempt a witty remark or retort at another rat bailing ship; but here let me help you. For anybody interested, just take a look at the member list. Only a few of the pre-2004 members are still around, many like me were/are waiting for a change. Most of the current hatch of crustaceans latched on here between 2006-2008. Since then many of them have logged over 10,000 posts in 4-5 years. I was taught that practice makes perfect. How can one possibly practice sailing techniques if they're always at the keyboard? Hmmm. One thing for sure, they've become adept navigating a keyboard. I really can't comprehend 10,000 posts as I've personally only logged including this, 512 in 12 years, but still hold a rep power of 13, the same as some with over 3900 posts, higher than many, but probably as undeserved as the rest.

The rating system is obviously nepotistic as the 20 -30 top rated members like to shower each other in bouquets and accolades while carefully controlling the tenor of threads and posts. For a forum that proclaims to be "the largest sailing forum in the world" with a listed membership of over 155,000, the balance of power is very lopsided while the majority remain voiceless; many silent for fear of reprisal from the bully squads. I too have participated in this past time over the years yet feel remorseful having been drawn into this negativity.

Frankly, I could care less for the pedantic, repetitious, redundant responses this post may elicit. While not the first nor the last to jump the SN ship, I have even less care, and even less time to stay where the tide ebbs and flows in a world where the members still believe the world is flat. I'm going sailing.

"Water, water, everywhere, And all the boards did shrink;
Water, water, everywhere, Nor any drop to drink."
Just for the heck of it, & having a little time to burn, I went back & read the first post, dated 8-20-12, by Sea Hunter. Not quite sure what was rubbing against his grain? I joined in 2007 & found it interesting. Later I discovered PRWG, & found that entertaining.

With the exception of PRWG, it appears that many/most posters take the time & effort to try to help those that have questions or problems with boating related issues. I am not even close to being an expert on anything, but do have some experience with a number of different kinds of boats, engines & mechanical things.

When asked, I share some of these experiences, hoping it will benefit those asking for input. Pretty simple, no attempt to bully, intimidate, or be rude to anyone. Still not sure what Sea Hunter was concerned about?

Re: I'm Done

I started from nothing, this forum has been the source of more information than I would expect to obtain from a BA.
Stoats and weasels are evil creatures. They kill and ear rats, LOL.
I don't interact well with people. This forum has and is helping. Sailors are by the most part real. Even if they are sometimes randy and blunt.
Thank you all for your information, and for preparing me to go to sea (I hope).

Re: I'm Done

I didn't take the time to go back & read all the posts. However, it appears some are not pleased? Reading & participating on these forums is voluntary. I enjoy all of them, how does one know what 2 stroke oil is best, or how to vote?

And stoats. Stoats and weasels.
