Bow Centreline.

Hi All,

We have put an offer on a 1977 Grampian 28 subject to the results of the marine survey. But I hope someone may answer this question please...there is a 1 to 1.5" hole on the bow centreline below the waterline, which has a wooden plug in it. The knot meter is nearby on the port side.
This boat is being sold by a marina for storage not being paid, so little history is being offered. The boat is in great shape and is c/w all equipment including a Volvo Penta Diesel Model 2002 inboard which looks pretty clean.
The boat is going to be a great cosmetic project and we look forward to owning our first sailboat.

Cheers,.

It might be the thru-hull for the depth sounder transducer. See what the surveyor has to say about it, but if there is to transducer to go in the spot, it is not a big deal to glass up and fill the hole. Leaving just a wooden bung in the hole is not a good idea.

Thanks guys for the replies! I will wait for the survey, but it looks like the hole was part of manufacturing not after. I pulled everything out of the Vberth area and looked below. There is a water holding tank, but I think the hole is still towards the stern from there?
Besides glassing over it, what could be used as a permanent plug?

Cheers,

Ron

You could put a true through hull fitting for a future mascerator pump out if you were ever going offshore.

Probably is for the speed/ knot log transducer. We dont leave ours in as it gets clogged with growth. Do you have that instrument on the boat? If you do the transducer will be somehwere attached to a cable in the v berth hull area.,

Regardless if the through hull was factory installed, or aftermarket, it is still just a useless hole in your hull! If you still have the instruments but the transducer is missing, you might be able to get a new transducer, or the correct plug that locks in to the through hull. If you don't have the instruments, but you think you might get some, you may be able to remove the old through hull and put the new one in the same hole, although the odds of the new having the same hole size is pretty slim. If you don't plan on getting instuments anytime soon, just glass up the hole!
