Funny you should say that, because I decided last week to move into an igloo. Does anyone have any advice on how to build one? Is it just a matter of cutting up some snow blocks and stacking them up? I have never been in the snow before so I don't know how these things work. If anyone could post some instructions that would be great.

I also need to learn how to skin a seal, if you could include that. Thanks in advance.

Right now, we're trying to figure out our priorities in considering the liveaboard life. We've been talking about this seriously for almost a year and there's still so much unresolved it seems buying a boat to live aboard may not work for us. We're talking a lot about compromises now.
This just so much I have in response to this... I'm going to cut off my hands now, to avoid typing.

Same as in shore side relationships , better to live close by and visit often.

Re: Liveaboard Sailing First Timer

You know anything is doable....you just have to be willing to be inconvenienced a bit and committed to frugality. What pains me is when someone says how inexpensive it is to live on a boat and makes it out to be a life of luxury, with all the romantic adventure of cruising the high seas thrown in!

The reality is more like living on a boat is definitely something you have to understand and costs depending on how comfortable you want to be. It runs the whole gamut of living in a mini camper to living in a mansion. The more space mobility and comfort you want the more expensive and maintenance intensive a vessel you will need......

With the dollar recovering, I've been traveling Europe for a few months now on about $40/day. Totally doable if you're willing to cut corners--e.g. use handsoap as shampoo, stay with ten+ people in dorm rooms, gorge on free baguettes etc etc.

There are those days of $100+...gotta live a little bit!

I wonder if it wasn't a prank or fraudulent post. It seems a little ambitious to have never sailed before yet decide to live aboard and sail in Hawaii.
I doubt it. I think s/he is just a quick learner. Post number 1: "I want to live on a sailboat." Post number 2: "Holy sh*t, sailing is more expensive than I thought."

Most people go years between post number one and post number two.

Maybe it's just me....

Re: Liveaboard Sailing First Timer

I am sure that some think it adventurous or romantic.....to live on a sail boat and travel....just lower the anchor, stay awhile and then when the moment hits you move on to another exciting place.
But the reality is that living on a boat requires you to give up many land based comforts and requires a tremendous amount of planning, forthought, systems knowledge, money, resources etc., etc, etc. Easy, cheap and carefree is not the description that I would give it.

Maybe a tent on the beach, or an igloo.....those might be simpler. Just meandering thoughts....
