Furler Install

I stopped by to check on a friend installing an Aldo furler on his Pearson 26. By the time I got there he had most of the foil snapped on and was about to cut the last piece.
I took one look at his setup and asked how he figured he was going to get the drum low enough.

It looks to me like the forestay needs to be replaced to get rid of that super long tensioner. Is their any other way?

Yes, seems to me he'll want to get a new turnbuckle up there so his drum can ride lower where it will be better aligned with furling lines and loads.

The anchor will need to be moved. Is there room for the furler drum up there - he might need to rethink where the drum is completely.
Let's hope he took measurements, and has a receipt.

What about just getting rid of the turnbuckle all together?
The tension can be adjusted with the back stay yes?

But then you'd have to get your forestay length right on the money.

I ran into those height issues when installing our Alado in the spring. I had already installed a new forestay with turnbuckle (beautifully made for me by SN member Knothead). I then wanted the drum to go over the top of the turnbuckle to put the drum in about the same height as my old Hood unit, but the plastic spacer hole wasn't big enough. The Alado rep suggested I just drill the spacer out to the diameter needed, which worked nicely. I spent an embarassing amount of my installation time cogitating on height and positioning.
