The bay has a lot of variation in conditions. Up near the mouth where it is deep (In the gap) she would preform at her optimum but there you need to dodge huge ships and ferries but few shoals or navigation hazards. Such a heavy draft as the Rawson has, cannot be said to do so well in the South bay or up in San Pablo where the shallows can sneak up on you and you need a chart.
Most people like the areas near Alcatraz , Angel Island, Richmond, Berkeley, Treasure island and even under the bridge toward San Mateo Bridge but there is shallow waters to the East and again one should always pay attention to charts where you may go aground. Or should I say a-mud. Any attempt to push her off by jumping in must take into account the need for snow shoes. The extremely soft mud can hold you down on a rising tide. If you are in a falling tide and aground you best get help quick. Fisherman might come to your aid using channel 16 and even a small boat can be of great assistance in a situation with a 5 foot keel. To answer your question though, I most certainly would say yes. When the sun goes down and you are in some cove or anchorage the heavy ballast makes for less pitch and roll and thus a good sleep. The Rawson 30 +2 is wonderful at accommodation.

I am wondering if a Rawson 30 will be a good boat for sf bay? I realise this is a heavy ocean boat. How poor will the sailing proformance be in the bay? I would like to sail the bay for a year or two and then go cruising. Would i be better off buying a 24-28 footer for the time being and upgrading in the future?
