Re: New Tiller

I think West Marine has one that will work in their catalog. I wouldn't mind one with a little more upward offset. Remember they price match and will ship free to a store near you.

Sounds like a plan! Good luck. They seem reasonably priced to me...

Re: New Tiller

Thanks for the suggestions. I am trying to stick with wood. As I mentioned, I wasn't able to find any stock tillers with comparable dimensions. (2 1/8 * 2 1/8 * 54" with a 2" rise)

I could try the jig and gluing approach to make my own laminate but, although I have put a lot of my own work into the boat, I would rather buy the tiller if possible and have it in hand when the weather changes.

Re: New Tiller

It's actually a relatively easy thing to make yourself, with plenty of options.

Solid wood, if your tiller is not 'curved' simply get a nice piece of hardwood and trim it to shape, may need to glue two or three planks together for thickness..

Consider making a 'straight' tiller out of Aluminum channel, and fashion a more user friendly place to hold on to it, or bolt 'u' handles on either side (extends your reach slightly) - and no more varnishing!

Laminate your own to the curve you need, jigs are quite easy to make with some angle iron and a heavy piece of plywood, then choose a couple of different coloured woods, cut them into appropriate thicknesses and glue/clamp into the jig. Shape, sand and finish to suit.

All that said I expect you'll find standard tillers at various marine suppliers if you look around.

New Tiller

Does anyone have any recommendations on where I can get a new tiller for my Helms 25? From what I can see, I am going to have to get it custom made. I couldn't find anything stock with the right dimensions. Of the couple of places that I tried so far, one didn't respond to the question and the other said that their custom tiller maker just packed up and left.

Thanks!
