A likely scenario in yer update. I also found a few bobbles in the lines that disappeared once warm weather and popped in the water. Think "shrinkage" !

Thanks for the suggestion. However, the compression post is was redone when the new standing rigging was installed.

Here's an update:

When spring finally arrived, the indent slowly popped itself back out. My current thinking is that the entire bulkhead contracted over the cold winter, and where its bonded to the hull, the hull was "sucked inward". Close examination shows no damage at all. So, will it happen again next winter? Only time will tell.

Re: Hull indent on P30, where uppers meet the hull

It could be the oak compression post is rotten and causing the hull to buckle...
I have the same year and model, a 1974 Pearson 30 and I had to harden the post... Fortunately, I was able to locate "Minwax Wood Hardener" and painted the post with the mast stepped down and on dry... When I stepped it up, the Epoxy Resin impregnated post took it like steel...

I'll take some pix and post asap.
But basically, where the upper shroud is bonded to the hull, about 6 inches below the rub rail, the hull goes in a bit, rather than the smooth curve you would expect. Looks like a dimple or dent with an 8" diameter.

Hull indent on P30, where uppers meet the hull

I have a 1974 Pearson P30. I noticed that there is a hull indent right where the upper stay meets the hull below the rub rail. Obviously I immediately loosend the uppers. On closer inspection, there are minor indents at the lowers too...and both sides...although you really have to search for it. The indent for the upper is significant...very visible because of the shiny hull.

So, I think the indent is caused by overtight rigging. The question the damage permanent? Or can I just retune and be on my way?

The boat is in a cradle, on the hard. The winter temps went way below zero, and I think I should have relaxed the tension on the rig more.

Is there some way I can stiffen this area of hull?
