Re: Removing adhesive non skid from deck

I removed ours mid-summer cruise on the hook, so no heat gun. A sharp edged 2 inch angled blade scraper and several hours to do our smallish cockpit sole. (Did I mention the blister? ) Not fun...

Once the bulk of the material is off you can use a solvent for the residue, no risk of prolonged exposure as most solvents flash off quickly enough.

Re: Removing adhesive non skid from deck

The solvent is usually naphtha based, like rubber cement, so covering the area with alum foil to give it a chance to seep in around the edges might help more than trying to use exotic solvents that might damage the deck. If you know what the non-skid is, try contacting the maker.

Heat guns are great but that may also require extra patience as the thick material will also slow the heat transfer. I'd expect it to work better than the solvent.

You know I dunno if I'd rather do that, or have to try to rough up after KiwiGrip and redo... So far I'm finding these kinds of projects very time consuming... Let us know what you find works best.

Sounds like a horrible job. Best wishes Sailors.

Re: Removing adhesive non skid from deck

Evan,

I also have adhesive non-skid removal on my Spring work list. I'm going to carefully test using a heat gun to loosen the adhesive while I scrape off the rubber. I assume there will be some adhesive residue which I'll remove with a solvent. Unless someone has a better idea.

Re: Removing adhesive non skid from deck

I've done this (assuming you're talking about 'treadmaster' style)... I suppose there are some solvents that might help, but you need to worry about damaging the underlying glass.

Scraper, elbow grease (and accompanying blisters) was my method of necessity (certainly not choice!!) Fortunately it was just the cockpit sole area.

Removing adhesive non skid from deck

I need to remove some sections of adhesive non skid from my deck. Anyone know how to do this?
