If you want to pay the admission price, you can typically pack more amp hours into the same space with AGMs too. Sounds unnecessary for the OP.

jeff, AGM is no better or cheaper than wet acid UNLESS you can benefit from the diffferences in the design. AGM can sit over the winter witout being charged, without permanent damage. Wet lead takes permanent damage (irreversible sulfation) if it sits for 30 days without recharging, regardess of charge state. AGM will never eat a hole in your clothing. Wet lead will at any opportunity including the carpet in your car. AGM will cost more than wet lead, but it will cost less than the clothing wet lead ate. Wet lead can be topped up if you overcharge it, AGM can't.

And gel batteries require totally different charging, for most users that's not an option.

Whether you chose wet lead or AGM, if the boat sits a a dock most of the time, a good shore charger will pay for itself by keeping the battery properly topped up but not overcharged. If you can't or don't have that option, hook up a small (20-30W) solar panel with controller and that probably will keep the battery topped up just as well. Keeping any battery properly and fully charged may double the life you get from it, and with battery prices skyrocketing that's good economy.

The advantage of an AGM is less (no) maintenance, the disadvantage is the specific charging requirements.
For a weekender with a trickle charge or low amp outboard alternator and low amp needs, stay simple and stay sailing.

im leaning towards grabbing a group 27 deep cycle from wal mart, $75! with good reviews. Pretty hard to go wrong for $75

Re the interstate batteries - read carefully the charging requirements. I have a set that require an equalization every 2 weeks at 17 volts. Had a hard finding a controller that would do it.

The charger i use on the boat is actually capable of charging AGM, but i dont see an advantage in terms of capacity per dollar.

Nor have the right charging system, unless you changed that too. Batt types are not interchangeable on all chargers.

Its not that its a fancy battery,. If you had the right setups for charging and usage it would fit and be cost effecticve to get an AGM. Gel, but you dont so what you decided to get is an appropriate choice.

Also, If you had greater usage needs I would suggest two 6 volt golf carts as the thicker plates allow a much greater number of deep cycle charges thus greater life.

What you have decided is appropriate for your use, just be sure they are deep cycle batteries.
