For a $500 consultation fee flying the length of the west coast is really not an option. I do not fly coach. I looked at both boats on Yachtworld and my client visited the two boats. He preferred the boat with the galley up but felt the other boat was the better value.

Bob,
The San Diego boat seems to be the better of the two...What were your thoughts after seeing them in person?

I think a bow thruster would be a very good addition to one of these.

Bob,
Thanks for the input...probably not the easiest boats to control around the dock either.
Sure would make a nice live aboard though! Have you heard of the Trunk Monkey? Have they invented a Teak Monkey yet?

I agree with Jon. I looked at both of them for a client. Interesting takes on the old Formosa 50 hull. They are not the type of boat I would want to sail. You'll have to work hard and long to get one of them to go to weather.

Re: Mikelson 51

Those boats are gigantic. The first time I saw one (Formosa 51) the stemhead was a couple of feet over my head while I stood on the dock - I'm over 6'. Maintaining one in bristol shape would be at least a full time job. You'd need to live aboard and/or have deep pockets to keep one up. Of all the variations on that hull - Formosa, Hardin etc. the Mikelson has the best rep and fetches the highest prices.

I'd expect them to need a stiff breeze to sail decently.

Anyone have any info the these boats? Classic heavy displacement with full keel and full of teak all over. There are a couple of nice looking ones on Yachtworld right now. Do they sail worth a dam?

The sailor pirate in me likes, but the boat owner does not like the maintenance.
