Nice work. 80 gril sanding seems aggressive. Did you try finer grits first with no success?
Mostly in the boatyard I see people using a steam cleaner like for clothes. Works wonders.

As you can see, the gel coat was thinner on this side for some reason. I sanded through in several places.
It was probably moored starboard to for much of its life.

80 grit is not too aggressive for the initial prep. Starting with anything finer is just a waste of energy and paper.

People generally have a tendency to start with far too fine a grit when prepping for paint. It's far more effective to work up from coarse to fine than to spend an excessive amount of time working with paper that is too fine for the stage you are at. I start my bottom prep with 40. Topsides I'd start with no finer than 80 and probably 60.

Orbitals leave much finer scratches that a comparable grit by hand.

Re: Topside makeover

More to come!!! I am actually further along than this, but 100+ hours at the boat and a bad NIC card have been holding things up. =)

Re: Topside makeover

This stuff is gonna make a huge difference I think. It's called guide coat and it is a fine black powder that you put on between sanding. It shows you low spots and spots that need more attention
