Re: Rum

I'm surprised no one has mentioned Cacique yet.....this is another good sipping rum. I keep a bottle of this at home for those nights when I am landlocked and wishing I could be on the boat!

Re: Rum

When the margaritas start getting too sweet, my backup is Mount Gay and Tonic with a healthy squeeze of lime. Very refreshing and substantially better than a gin or vodka tonic.

I was introduced to Zacapa 15yr old as a sipping rum and was amazed how good it was. I never thought of rum for sipping like I do a single malt. I don't often have either aboard, however.

Re: Rum

Ah yes! So many good choices out there, how do you choose just one favorite?

Right now in my cupboard I have:

Doorly's XO - good enough to be a sipper, cheap enough to mix if needed.
Ron Zacapa 23 - a nice sipper with a splash of water
Mount Gay XO - a sipper for when I want something less sweet
Cruzan Single Barrel - one of my favorite sippers. That's the one I pull out to introduce scotch drinkers to rum.
Flor De Cana 18 - very tasty, but a bit pricey.
Appleton Reserve-Can be sipped or mixed. You can never go wrong with Appleton products!
Cruzan 9 Spiced - meh- don't think much of it, but I will bury it in coke! Not a fan of spiced.
Cruzan Blackstrap - Pretty tasty black rum. Makes the best Rum 'n' Egg Nog I have ever tasted!
Havana Club 7 - I've had it for a long time because I really don't like it! Don't even like serving it to others!
El Dorado 15 - Very nice! If you like the Zacapa, try this one!

I really enjoy drinking good rum neat or with a bit of water. I don't like it on the rocks because the ice dilutes it too much, and I find when it is room temperature more aromas are released, adding another sense to the flavors!

When I am at anchor or at the dock I like it with Coke or Ginger Ale. Gosling's Black Seal is one of my main staples for this purpose, although I do like Kraken as a mixer too!

I cant figure it, but somehow PA state stores actually always have Goslings. most retail stores in NJ never had it. Pussers on the other hand was pretty common.

Re: Rum

Curzan Black Strap. With Coke Zero if you must. Ginger Ale or Ginger beer is better.

Re: Rum

Mount Gay, with cola, lots of ice, and a squeeze of lime.

Re: Rum

I have enjoyed Private Stock by Capt. Morgan but my current favorite for both quality and value is Cruzan Spiced Rum.

Mix with coke or coke zero and half of a key lime.

Or, go with Pineapple Juice and a splash of a red juice (cranberry, grape, whatever).

Or, just do a shot from the bottle.
