Skimmer Hello. I've just joined Sailnet, primarily in order to continue this conversation about the Tyler 42 Ketch for sale in Washington. We're in the early stages of looking for a reasonably priced boat for our family of four capable of coastal and bluewater cruising. We've been checking out Cal 39s but would prefer an aftcabin model if the price is low enough. The Tyler 42 might fit our needs, but like GreatWhite said, there's precious little information, reviews about the boat available on the web. I'd love to chat with GreatWhite about their perspectives/observations/conclusions about the boat. Our home phone is 707 825 7505, please give us a ring or let us know your phone and we'll call you. GreatWhite It is a single fin keel, 6 foot draft with a skeg rudder and it is a ketch the mizzen mast is not installed currently but comes with the boat.

lharmon I took a quick look at the link from Thesnort and the boat in Vancouver did not appear to be a ketch. Does the boat have twin keels? Some Tylers do. I think it would probably be a roomy stable boat but perhaps not the best sailing especially to weather with the twin keels.

GreatWhite Yes the boat in Vancouver is the one I am seriously considering. Everything I have learned indicates that it is an offshore capable boat (similar to a Bowman 46 - hull made in same factory in England).

There is a large overhang at the stern which is similar to older hull designs. Not sure if this is a liability when it comes to offshore performance?

thesnort I've never heard of this one before, but, in case you're still looking, I googled and found this one near Vancouver, CAN. But, then again, this might be exactly the same boat you found. One in England appears to be selling well above the 100K mark.

Family Cruiser: Tyler Slipper?

Over the past two years Sailnet has helped fuel my dream of taking my family cruising. The site is an awesome learning tool. Thank you to all who have put so much into Sailnet. Being a relative newbie we are reaching out for assistance on our boat selection.

I have been sailing on an interior lake for 2 years on our 24 foot sloop, going into Regattas and learning about boats and sailing. I am taking week long Sail-and-Learns gaining my certifications.

My wife is on side WOOOOHOOO!!! She is planning on taking some certifications too. We have down-graded our house and are financially preparing to be ready to Cruise in 4 years with our two boys who will be 7 and 9 at that time.

We would like to buy our boat in the next year or so and then get use to it. After figuring the boat and layout and how it works for the family we will refit and modify as necessary. We will sail the Gulf Islands of Vancouver Island on our vacations and some long weekends. Three years from now we hope to be at the point were we have the confidence and training to circumnavigate Vancouver Island. Next, our cruising plan is to head firstly to Mexico and then beyond (maybe through the Panama Canal.) Our budget is $100,000 for a boat, refitting and equipment. After considering buying a new boat and putting it into charter for 4 years, I still can’t see us being able to afford that route. Additionally I can’t find a boat that works in Charter that has all the family cruising/off-shore potential that we want.

We have found a used vessel that we like and might fit the bill. It is a lesser known boat, a 1979 Tyler Slipper 42 foot Ketch rig. It has a glass hull, fin keel with a skeg rudder, a deep vee hull, a centre cockpit and a new engine. This boat is roughly similar to a Bowman 46. The sea cocks have been upgraded and the wiring is done well.
The decks have had the teak removed and is sealed and painted and the hull is barrier coated and painted recently. The rigging is oversized. It seems to have many of the characteristics of an Ocean capable cruiser that we are looking for. The previous owner has lovingly done much work and refitting.

The fact this boat is a Ketch rig is my major concern especially for light wind sailing. It is a rare boat and it is hard to compare and research it, although I feel it is very well built. The ketch rig has some advantages that are well documented in other threads. All boats are a compromise but am I way off on this choice before we make an offer and order a survey??
