Thanks. This is what I was looking for. When you say "they give you a certificate" that you mail to the state I assume you mean ASA right?

I did the exact some thing in Mystic, CT. They give you certificate to mail into the state and you pay an additional fee. The state will mail you your card.

This is pretty much standard with any class you take in CT to get the card.

Not that I'm a great lover of jet skis, but, I sometimes regret that I didn't get the PWC endorsement as there have been a couple of times over the years that I could have hopped on a friends jet ski and taken it for a spin

It a simple little thing but you have to do it. I've been told that this year the powers that be will really be cracking down on boaters without the cert. Fines to $150.00 I misplaced mine about 4 years ago but nobody had ever asked for it any way. I think this crack down will be mainly on the inland waterways but you never know.

Re: Connecticut Safe Boater Certificate with ASA certification

When I took ASA 101 in PA, the test included the PA boating safety cert. The ASA instructor let the state know I passed and the state cert was mailed to me a week or so later.

Check with your ASA school. lt might be the same way.

We do similar with the USCGAux sailing course. When students pass the test we hand them a state form that they complete and send to the state for their PA state cert.

Here's the list of private providers that are approved by ct. ( as of last year) to teach courses that lead to certification. Your school on here?
Doesn't say how it leads to certification though.

I would suggest contacting a DEEP office. Ct is all about revenue so I'm sure they will come up w/ some fee you will need to pay.

CaribDream The PWC endorsement is separate and I don't have an interest in getting it. My wife took the CT course and it didn't cover trailering.

Re: Connecticut Safe Boater Certificate with ASA certification

It looks like the course is 8 hours not 5.. but, it looks like you can pay a fee ($75.00) and take an equivalency exam, and skip the course.

Maybe that's what ASA ( school? ) is refering to? Can't say.

DEEP: Certification Requirements See also the FAQ.

Unless one of the ASA instructors is also a proctor for the state, it looks like you might have to take another exam.

But, no...I have no specific knowledge of Connecticut laws, other than what I just read.

There's a few NJ schools that offer a combo ASA cert and a Boater Safety Card..but generally speaking they are two totally seperate courses.

i.e. ASA doesn't cover trailoring, jet ski's etc etc.

Connecticut Safe Boater Certificate with ASA certification

I am a lifelong power boater new to sailing. I have always boated in New York state where I didn't need a certificate or license for my boats. I am now getting into sailing with my first day sailer which will have a small outboard which I plan on using in CT. I have not taken the CT Safe Boater certificate course because in a few weeks my wife and I are taking ASA Basic Keelboat, ASA Coastal Cruising, ASA Bareboat, and ASA Coastal Navigation certifications which ASA states are accepted by CT as substitutes. What ASA can't seem to tell me is how I go about getting the CT Safe Boaters certificate after completion of my ASA certs. All they say is that I won't have to take the standard CT 5 hour course.

Has anyone done this before that could shed light on how I go about getting the CT cert?

Thanks
