Re: I never hit anything that big!

I would trust the tug more than I would the operator.

Re: I never hit anything that big!

The HMCS Winnipeg does have damage to her port bow. There is a long and obvious crease in the gunnel.
The troller has some serious damage too but it will be a relatively easier fix to do as the damage is contained to a small area on the bow as opposed to a large cease down the side and possibly the deck too.
The HMCS Winnipeg had just gone through an extensive refit and was being prepared for deployment when this collision occured.
In one of the local news reports you can see one of the tugs that was pulling the troller into the habour had been rolled. It's mast and radar tower is bend 90 degrees out over her port side. This happened before the collision.

Re: I never hit anything that big!

After a collision it is standard practice not to back out...backing out could leave a large hole and a quick sinking...staying together sort of keeps the hole plugged...Best practice is to avoid the whole situation...

some sort of live well on the deck?

And yes, the trawler definatly seemed to come off the worst of it.. I wonder how the Navy ship looked?

Re: I never hit anything that big!

I'd like to know where all the water came from though. The ships weren't moving fast enough to cause a wake or massive splash. I guess the water was on deck on the trawler. I think the reason the 2 ships were attached for so long afterwards was that the navy might have been worried the trawler would "do a runner". Now THATS a hit 'n run.

I never hit anything that big!

Not a pretty site. Obvious who got the worst of the deal, though.
