Re: Ever back into the slip under sail power?

We used to do that all the time on a friends Santana 20 in marina del rey, california. The hardest part was to get the boat to stop without needing to fend off the boat in the slip to windward... We backed both jib and main

Re: Ever back into the slip under sail power?

I've sailed backwards, and I've sailed into a slip, but I never had the nerve to try and sail backwards into a slip. I'm impressed.

True. OTOH, pushing out the boom adds a large turning force (center of effort way out over the water). Could start with the boat over-corrected to port, when the boom is pushed to starboard. Then as it gains way it will turn toward the orientation that you want... NOT THAT I HAVE EVER TRIED THIS! Awsome vid.

Re: Ever back into the slip under sail power?

I think I was sailing in New Orleans when I saw this. A fairly large racing boat would sail perpendicular to their dock turn up into the wind just in front of their slip, drop their sails and drift back into their slip under bare poles. I can't remember if they won the race but they won the day on style points alone.

Re: Ever back into the slip under sail power?

While many would say that I have a gift for doing many things in life backwards, THAT is something that I'd never even THOUGHT of! Heck, I'm just now getting up the courage to back into my slip under motor!

Sometimes showing off is just showing off, whereas other times (like the video above) its just plain AWESOME!

Lol great video.

Great potential to screw that one right up!

You should have sold deck chair space on the dock

Re: Ever back into the slip under sail power?

Thanks all. I was mostly a spectator. I do highly recommend practicing on someone else's boat first.

Re: Ever back into the slip under sail power?

Bravo. I've sailed into the slip bow-in, don't recall having backed in. Our piers are close together so little room in which to reverse direction and build up any working sternway for the rudder to use.
