Re: Saybrook to Block I

On basically that same route on last summer's cruise (actually leaving Westbrook heading east towards Watch Hill), the wind and current were opposing and it was REALLY uncomfortable. Changed plans and went through Plum Gut to Shelter Island.

Re: Saybrook to Block I

I remember as a kid getting caught in an easterly on an outgoing tide, crossing from Montauk to New London. Tossed us around pretty good in a 15' boat as there was a very short wave period. Uncomfortable, not dangerous.

Re: Saybrook to Block I

Not sure I really understand the question. The race isn't all that big, if you're only asking how far/long it is. Opposing current and big wind can be very uncomfortable, but not like a dangerous rage generally. Otherwise, it's pretty easy to negotiate.

Re: Saybrook to Block I

..as I recall it's about 35 miles + or -
Timing the race is key..so don't worry too much when the connecticut river current turns. The current will turn at the race before that. I think It's about 14 miles to the race from OS, so if you want to be there at the turn leave OS about 2 1/2 hours before. You can certainly leave a little later.. and get a nice push out. It could get very choppy in any kind of east wind with outgoing current. And, of course, fog is always a possibility. Keep your eyes out for the crossing ferries. Otherwise it's a pretty quick trip.. Most times I've been through in that direction ( early morning) it's been pretty benign.

Take a look at eldridge.

Re: Saybrook to Block I

You do not spend a lot of time in the race itself, but the currents between there, while not dangerous, are enough to make it worthwhile going with the tide. So you will be in fairly strong currents from just outside Saybrook until you get pst the race at Fisher's Island.

It is an enjoyable sail. On my cruise last summer I circled between Block and Saybrook, picking up and dropping off crew at a marina there.
