Yeah, that is the piece that gives you a lacerated scalp or at minimum rips your clothing when your tying your sails. Whatever it is, I would guess it is upside down and used to stick above the boom. Is it tight or loose?

Re: What is This Piece of Metal on my Boom

On my boom I have two of these pieces. One attaches to the mainsheet blocks. The other is just hanging around. I sort of figured out it connects to the hook that is crimped to the backstay in order to stabilize the boom without using the mainsheet when the boat is at dock. Of course, that might not be the real reason for it...

Re: What is This Piece of Metal on my Boom

The small crank should have a place, near the mast end, for it to insert and crank in order to roate the boom for reefing. The topping lift must be attached to that 'metal piece' at the end of the boom.

I had boom roller furling on my 1965 Hood design 24 ft boat. It was not a great system, had to have someone pull on the end of the sail as it got cranked in oder to have a good sail shape. I changed over to jiffy reefing and never regretted it.

Re: What is This Piece of Metal on my Boom

There is a little crank up at the mast that's mystified me since buying the boat. It's very small.

Must take more pictures, but I just can't seem to get myself down there, as I'm currently hating the boat, for more than one reason.

I'll get over it.

Re: What is This Piece of Metal on my Boom

The metal piece looks like it could be part of a boom roller reefing system. The topping lift would be attached and the boom allowed to rotate whith the lift attached. Check to see if there is a place to insert a crank at the boom end near the mast.

That boom looks just like the one on my Pearson 26. The metal strap is what the mainsheet traveler's upper block connects to.

Stray bit of metal in a place where skulls might be found?

Yeah, the technical word for that is "an accident waiting to happen".

But I'd agree, the topping lift could go there. ALthough it looks like a topping lift would be perfectly happen on that eye on top of the boom, and less likely to gash anyone or foul anything.

Re: What is This Piece of Metal on my Boom

I have seen something like this for attaching the boom to a hook on the backstay, in place of a true topping lift. But as you have a topping lift, I am with the rest of the gang.

That crossed my mind, too. Unsure of the setup rigging. It would have to attach to the toe rail, the way the boat is setup now.

going to try the topping lift idea and your idea too. Can be used both ways.thanks guys and gals.
